Staying in Shape

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

Basketball teams competing in the NCAA "March to the Final Four" don't start getting in shape the first week of March. Their season began back in the fall. In fact, the key to athletic success for any team or individual is to practice all year long. Athletes know that it is far easier to stay in shape than to get in shape.

And the same is true spiritually. If we ignore our spiritual "workouts" Monday through Friday, and then try to spend all day Saturday getting ready for Sunday's "big game"—it doesn't work. We'll show up for church feeling spiritually out of sorts and unconnected. If we don't talk to God or read His Word all week, it sounds like a foreign language come Sunday. Scripture is full of admonitions to stay in spiritual shape—to live in an ongoing, communicative relationship with Jesus Christ.

If God called you into the game today to make a winning play for Him, would you be prepared? Staying in spiritual shape is the only way to be ready when He calls.

To take up the cross of Christ is no great action done once for all; it consists in the continual practice of small duties which are distasteful to us.
John Henry Newman
