Even the Dog and Cat
…showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.
Titus 2:10
Roland Hill used to say that he wouldn't believe a man to be a true Christian if his wife, his children, the servants, and even the dog and cat, were not the better for it. That's the point of Titus 2:1-10, as Paul gave instructions to the various groups of Christians on the island of Crete. He insisted they demonstrate integrity, being honest, hardworking, and upright. In this way, said Paul, they would adorn the doctrine of God.
The Message puts it this way: "Their good character will shine through their actions, adding luster to the teaching of our Savior God."
If we live out our doctrine, others will see how true, beautiful, and desirous it is. By the same token, if we allow sin to damage our testimony, we tarnish the Gospel in the eyes of others.
We can't just "believe" our doctrines or study them in our minds. They must become our lifestyle. When we "wear" our doctrine in everyday life, others will see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven.
The heathen do not judge of the Christian's doctrine from the doctrine, but from his actions and life.
