Mercy Rules

Daily E-votional from Ed Young Ministries
May 15, 2008 Web Version
...because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!
James 2:13

I've heard people say that the Christianity is for those who need a crutch in life, for the weak. But this verse shows that Christian life isn't for the weak or mild. It takes strength to stand up and treat people the way God calls us to.

As a believer, my life is an open book. People are looking to see if my faith is real or not. The same is true with you.

When you and I clock out of this life and stand before God, he is going to judge us; he's going to make us give an account for all of our words and actions while we were here on earth. And he is going to show us the same kind of mercy that we showed to others.

That's a difficult reality to face, especially when we get cut off in traffic or someone jams us or stabs us in the back. We want to lash out at them and get them back. But that's exactly when we need to remember this verse.

God is going to hold you to the standard to which you hold other people. Don't judge them. Don't lash out at them. Instead, show mercy and grace. After all, you have been given mercy through Jesus Christ.

A Prayer for Today

Dear God, There are times in life that I want to judge others for the actions towards me. Help me during those times to remember that you are the only true judge. And help me to reflect mercy and love in the face of those difficult encounters. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
