True Value

Daily E-votional from Ed Young Ministries
May 7, 2008 Web Version
The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
I Samuel 16:7

When you first meet someone, what is the first thing you think about? Sometimes we judge people by their physical appearance. If they have a certain physique, wear a certain brand of clothing or a specific type of jewelry, then we accept them. Other times, we concentrate on achievements. We judge them according to what they do professionally, how much money they make or what their title is. Maybe we base our decision to accept someone on their skin color or hair style, their hometown or their education.

But there's a danger when we look "at the outward appearance" to determine someone's value. Looks shouldn't determine worth; achievements shouldn't equal acceptance.

In a world that focuses so much on outward appearance, our loving and gracious God reminds us that the heart is really where we should focus. So when you meet someone for the first time, don't look to their clothing label first. Instead, learn to look at their heart and see them as someone who has value in God's eyes.

A Prayer for Today

Dear God, It can be so easy to look at someone's outward appearance before looking to their true worth. As I go through life, help me to see each person I meet as you see them. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
