 First Sermon
Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious.
1 Peter 2:7
Charlie and his friend were invited to a Sunday night cottage meeting, and each thought the other was giving the sermon. When the friend realized what was happening, he exclaimed, "I have never preached before, cannot do it, and will not. If you don't preach, there will be no sermon."
Charles had never preached before either, but en route his mind raced to think of something to say. He finally focused on 1 Peter 2:7: "To you who believe, He is precious."
To everyone's surprise, the sixteen-year-old did an incredible job, and people were amazed at the power and persuasiveness of his words. Afterward they demanded his age. "Never mind my age," he replied. "Think of the Lord Jesus Christ and His precious Spirit." Thus began the ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers.
We don't have to reach a certain age or level of spirituality before God can use us. He can use us now. All it takes is the willing heart of someone who believes on the Lord Jesus Christ and finds Him precious.
If we keep our places in all lowliness, our Lord will use us; but if we exalt ourselves, He will leave us to our nothingness.
