Acts 16:1-5
Tony Conigliaro, an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, was the youngest American League player to reach a career total of 100 runs; but on August 18, 1967, he was hit in the face by an errant pitch that nearly killed him. Through sheer determination, Tony eventually returned to Fenway Park; but his career was cut short, and he later suffered a debilitating illness and died at age forty-five. His reputation lives on, however, with the Tony Conigliaro Award, given each year to a courageous Major League player who overcomes suffering through determination and courage.
In the New Testament, Timothy faced persecution and adversity. His family was both spiritually and racially mixed, and we get the idea that his dad was unsympathetic to Timothy's faith in Christ. Later Timothy faced overt hostility and persecution from others. Then his mentor was beheaded. But that didn't keep Timothy from living an exemplary life. His reputation was sterling, and his hometown spoke well of him.
Our circumstances should never determine our attitude. Criticism and isolation come in many forms, but a victorious spirit hails from just one source--the Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we are "more than conquerors."
We shall steer safely through every storm, so long as our heart is right, our intention fervent, our courage steadfast, and our trust fixed on God.
