Precious Promise

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.
Psalm 32:8

Psalm 32

Little is known about Nathaniel Niles except that one day Psalm 32:8 greatly strengthened his heart, and he wrote a hymn about it that was published in 1873. He called his hymn "Precious Promise," and it began: "Precious promise God has given to the weary passerby / On the way from earth to Heaven, I will guide you with Mine eye."

Psalm 32:8 is an exceedingly great and precious promise because, without a sense of God's guidance, our lives make little sense. We may be eager to serve the Lord, but there are so many needs and so many doors. We need the Lord's leading if we're to know which needs to meet and what doors to enter. He will show us, opening doors and closing them as He deems best.

If a door has closed, don't be disappointed but take it as His appointment. We can trust His eye to guide us with perfect vision. He has promised to instruct and teach us in the way we should go and to guide us with His eye.

When thy secret hopes have perished in the graves of years gone by,
Let this promise still be cherished, "I will guide thee with Mine eye."
Nathaniel Niles
