Follow the Leader

Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me."
Matthew 16:24

Acts 6:1-6

The story is told of a nineteenth-century French politician named Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin. During the French Revolution he was trying to force his way through a mob that filled the streets, shouting, "Let me pass! I have to follow them—I am their leader!"

While that quote raises a smile, it actually connects two very important disciplines: leadership and "followership." We also find them connected in Scripture in the early days of the Christian church. When the apostles needed leaders (deacons) to handle the food distribution in the church, they asked the believers to choose seven men who were, among other things, "full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint" (Acts 6:3). In other words, these were men who were submissive to the apostles' leadership in the early days of the church. No one full of the Holy Spirit would have been a rebellious member of the church. So the believers selected seven proven followers as their new leaders.

If you aspire to leadership in life or in the church, you aspire to a good thing (1 Timothy 3:1). But it's good to aspire to "followership" first.

The first step to leadership is servanthood.
