Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?James 2:7
The word "Christian" dates back to the early days of the church, after the gospel had begun to spread throughout the world. The ironic thing is that, originally, the term was meant as an insult. It was meant to be derogatory. Yet today, it's the term that those who follow Christ have chosen for themselves.
Now, the word Christian means "one who comes from or belongs to Christ". And if you have accepted Christ into your heart, that is exactly who you are. You belong to Christ, the true Savior of the world. No longer is the term a derogatory one; now it is a word that denotes belonging and loyalty.
People are still abusing Christians, slandering the name of Jesus, trash talking Christ. But when you hear someone slam his name, remember that they are ultimately using the name of the one, true God; the Savior of the world.
Don't get so upset about their attempt to rile you that you miss the opportunity to show them what it truly means to be a Christian. Instead, love them. And pray for them in the name above all other names, Jesus Christ.
A Prayer for Today
Dear God, I know that everyday there are people who slam your name. They use your name as a curse word or in a manner that is nothing short of blasphemy. Help me to see past the emotion I feel when I hear that. And help me to instead pray for those people in the very name they are trashing, in the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
