The Counts and the No-Counts

Daily E-votional from Ed Young Ministries
May 5, 2008 Web Version
My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism.
James 2:1

Let's face it. We all carry around a list of the people we like to hang out with and those we don't like to hang out with. We put everyone we meet into one of two categories: the counts or the no-counts.

Some of us would rather rub shoulders with the rich, not the poor. Some white-collar people look down their noses at blue-collar people, and some blue-collar people look down on no-collar people. We all have that little list, even if we don't consciously think about it.

But in this verse, James says that attitude is a sin. It does not work. It does not honor God, and it does not help us to become mature and authentic.

Jesus never showed favoritism. He sought the downtrodden, the prostitute, the tax collector, the sinners. Why? Because we all need the savior, no matter who we are.

Jesus did not show favoritism when he died for each of us. And he did not show favoritism when he conquered death for each of us either. And because the work that Jesus did; because of his life, death and resurrection, God lays it right in front of us, "Don't show favoritism."

A Prayer for Today

Dear God, I know that there are times when I show favoritism to certain people. I ask that in those moments, you remind me of the selfless work that Jesus Christ did. Help me to look to his example of equality and show that same equality to everyone I meet. It is through his holy name that I pray, Amen.
