If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right.James 2:8
It's interesting that the Bible never tells us to love ourselves. It's assumed! God knew that we would do that naturally. Think about it. We just love to look out for ourselves and be in the number one spot.
Yet, "the royal law" tells us to put our neighbor into the spot we usually reserve for ourselves; to treat our neighbor the way we want to be treated.
It's called the royal law because this is the one that reflects the nature and character of God.
It's also called the royal law because if we could just follow this one rule, we wouldn't need any other laws. There would be no envy, lust, jealousy, anger, materialism. If we obeyed this law, we would be living like royalty—set apart.
When you are trying to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ, first make sure you're doing all you can to follow the royal law. No book or Bible study will do more for your spiritual maturity than doing all you can to love your neighbor as yourself. And then you will begin to discover just what it means to live the life Christ has secured for you.
A Prayer for Today
Dear Lord, I know that one of the most difficult things I can do is to love others as much as myself. I also know that if I could get this down, life would take on more meaning, depth and purpose. So help me as I go through each day to show those people I meet the love that you have shown me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
