Everyone should be quick to listen...
James 1:19

Communication, like anything else in life, has a rhythm-quick, slow, slow. To get the most out of life; to truly understand all that God has for us, we need to understand that rhythm and what it means in our lives.

But that second step, slow to speak, doesn't mean we should literally slow our communication cadence. It means that we should be deliberate and thoughtful about the words we speak to others and to God.

So often we can let words slip through our mouths that have yet to go through the filter of our minds. This is especially true if the words are emotionally charged. What James is saying here is that we should think before we speak.

When you take the time to consider your words before speaking, you'll be surprised how God can change the way you communicate. He'll allow you to process emotions, deal with feelings and decipher the words that he wants you to say in order to get your point across.

A Prayer for Today

Dear Lord, There are times when I want so badly to be heard and understood that I forget to think about what I'm communicating first. During those times, I pray that you give me the patience to slow down long enough to think about my words. And I pray that through my words you will be glorified in every situation. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
