Shut Your Mouth

Daily E-votional from Ed Young Ministries
April 30, 2008 Web Version
Everyone should be quick to listen...
James 1:19

Have you ever been part of a one-sided conversation? The other person talks and talks, slowing down only long enough to catch their breath before rambling on some more. Through all the words, what that person is really saying is that they don't know how to listen.

Being a good listener starts with closing our mouths and opening our ears. And that should be exactly how we are in our communication with God. When we come to God, we shouldn't rush to tell him what's on our minds. We should listen first to what he has to say. And we can hear him in a myriad of ways.

We can hear God's voice through his Word, the Bible. We can hear God through a situation with a friend or even when we sit absolutely still and silent before him.

But many of us are so busy with our me-isitic prayers and attitudes that we miss God's voice. Don't miss it. God wants to communicate something powerful to you. Learn to listen first to him. Because when you hear what he has to say, you'll discover the only words that can change your life.

A Prayer for Today

Dear Lord, I know that each day you have something significant you want to communicate to me. Yet so often, I'm more concerned with telling you what I want that I miss your message. Help me when I come to you to close my mouth and listen first so I can hear the words that you have for me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
