Thursday, May 15  The Chief Cornerstone The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. Psalm 118:22 Recommended Reading 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 The idea of setting a large stone with perfectly squared corners at the corner of a new building is an ancient one. The tradition is carried on today but for different reasons. Today, the cornerstone of a building is laid for commemorative or memorial reasons. But in ancient times, the squared corners of the cornerstone served an engineering purpose: to set the direction of the two walls connected at the corner. Interestingly, in modern Greece the blood of a sacrificial animal is sometimes sprinkled on a new cornerstone to give it strength and endurance. What an amazing picture of the cornerstone the Bible describes: Jesus Christ. Indeed, the Bible calls Christ the "chief" cornerstone. Christ sets the standard and measurements for the building for which He shed His blood—the temple made of living stones, the church (1 Peter 2:5). Whenever anything is built in the kingdom of God, it must draw its direction and standards from the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus Christ. The same is true for each Christian. The only way to adjust one's life is to measure it by the standard of the Chief Cornerstone. Jesus is the cornerstone, Come for sinners to atone.
