Mutual Admiration Society

Children's children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father.
Proverbs 17:6

The 1956 Broadway musical "Happy Hunting" featured a song called "Mutual Admiration Society" sung between a couple in love. In part, they professed, "The only fighting that we do is / Just who loves who more than who / And we go on like that from night 'til dawn / My baby and me." While such mutual admiration may be rare, it shouldn't be. In fact, God says it should exist between parents and their children.

It's not difficult to find a parent who takes pride in his children. But how many times have you met children who are proud of their parents? And not just proud, but children who "glory" in their parents (Proverbs 17:6)? The book of Proverbs teaches that parents rejoice in their wise children—and children should rejoice in their wise parents as well. What does it take for children to glory in their parents? Lots of love and understanding, the right mix of boundaries and freedom, a willingness to admit mistakes and ask forgiveness—those are good places to start.

If you're a parent seeking to increase your "cool factor" with your child, think of why you glory in your heavenly Father; and do the same with your child.

Train your child in the way in which you know you should have gone yourself.
