Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? But you have insulted the poor...James 2:5-6
As we go through life, we can tend to look at things the way the world looks at them. This is especially true when it comes to our view of other people.
Leaders are viewed as important; servants don't matter. If someone is rich, we elevate them. If someone is poor, we put them on the bottom rung of society.
But James tells us that we've got to turn our thinking upside down. Throughout the gospels, Jesus talks about an upside down kingdom. He says that if you want to be great in God's kingdom, you have to be willing to become a servant. If you want to be strong, become weak. If you want to be first, be willing to be last.
We shouldn't read this kind of passage and think, "It must be wrong to have a lot of stuff." The point isn't the amount of stuff. It's the posture of our hearts, the position of our minds.
How do you view people you meet? Do you jump at the chance to serve the rich, but neglect to help the poor? If so, that's where you need to have a shift in your perspective. Because God wants you to treat everyone equally, no matter how much stuff they have.
A Prayer for Today
Dear Lord, Help me to look at things upside down. Help me to realize that wealth, possessions and stuff have nothing to do with a person's worth. And help me to treat everyone I meet equally, the way you do. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
