With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.James 3:9-10
Most of us have been guilty of it at one time or another. One minute we're praising God at church, through a song or in a prayer. The next minute we are arguing with our spouse, yelling at our kids or cursing the drivers on the highway.
What we don't realize is that when we curse others, we are mocking God's creation. Whether it's though our words or our attitudes, we're essentially saying that they are worthless. But each and every person you set your eyes on is someone whom God has created—uniquely and lovingly. And they are someone who deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.
So before you shoot your mouth off at the person who cuts you off in traffic; before you demean the person who has a different opinion than you; before you let your anger determine your words and behavior, remember that everyone you see is created by God. Remember how God treats you every moment of everyday. And then turn around and treat those people you meet the same way.
A Prayer for Today
Dear Lord, It can be so easy to share words of love and praise with you and then turn around and curse and demean the people around me. During those times, remind me that each person I see is someone you love. Help me to see that they are worthy of your love, and help me to only communicate words of love to them. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
