For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. Have you ever heard someone say, "The words just slipped out," or, "I didn't really mean that"? It's an excuse to try and cover up something they said.
But when we speak, Jesus says, we are really just communicating what is on our hearts. In other words, our true feelings, our true emotions and our true beliefs will eventually emerge from our lips. Our words are shaped out of who we truly are.
If you are a Christ follower, the words you communicate with those around you should be words of affirmation and love, because that is what God has placed in your heart. At times, that can be difficult. But remember that God has placed inside your heart a spirit of love, kindness and forgiveness.
Don't just rattle of words. Instead, focus on the words that God wants you to use. Because it is then that you will communicate his desire for your life for everyone around you to hear.
A Prayer for Today
Dear Lord, I know that you have placed on my heart words that you want me to communicate. Help me to speak those words only so that those around me can see just what it means to love and follow you. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
