Biff vs. McFly
Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day . . .
Ephesians 6:13
There is a scene in the Oscar-winning film, Back to the Future, that perfectly illustrates how important it is to be prepared for a fight if you're going to stand up to the enemy. When Marty McFly finds himself stuck in 1955 at a local diner, he runs into Biff the bully and decides he's going to stand up to him because of how Biff has always mistreated his father. But when Marty realizes how big Biff is compared to himself, his only option for survival is to run; and he escapes on a skateboard.
When we face the enemy in our life, we ought to stand up and represent Christ Jesus; but if we are not prepared for the fight that will inevitably ensue, our only option will be to run and hide in defeat. This is why the Lord says to "shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace . . . and take . . . the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:15, 17).
We simply cannot fight the good fight alone; we must team up with the Lord and prepare ourselves with an intimate knowledge of Scripture and deep love for Him. Be brave, dear Christian, but also be ready!
Victory is the normal experience of a Christian; defeat should be the abnormal experience.
