The Sign Man

Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified.

The obituary page of the New York Times usually carries articles of great people who come to life's end, but recently it devoted a major headline and picture to an ordinary fellow known as the "Sign Man of Shea Stadium." His name was Karl Ehrhardt, and for many years he made 20-by-26-inch foldable placards that he carried in a storable bag to each home game of the New York Mets. At various points in the game, Ehrhardt would pull out the appropriate sign and hold it aloft. For example, when outfielder Jose Cardenal struck out, the sign would say: "Jose, Can You See?" Ehrhardt became famous for his signs.

As Christians, we should be known for our message. We have a CROSS to hold aloft, a Gospel to share, and words of wisdom to offer those needing the Lord.

Not many of us are wise according to the flesh, or mighty, or noble. The Lord uses the foolish and weak things of the world. He uses all kinds of people from all kinds of situations. We simply need to hold our signs aloft and, in our own ways, preach Christ crucified.

Evangelism is not a professional job for a few trained men, but is instead the unrelenting responsibility of every person who belongs to the company of Jesus.
