Courage Is Contagious
When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
Acts 28:15
When journalist John Kasich was a United States Representative from Ohio, two brothers came to Washington for a visit. Eric and Bobby Krenzke, who both suffered from a rare genetic neurological disorder known as dystonia, were on a trip organized by the Special Wish Foundation, but had trouble arranging a tour of the Capitol building.
After contacting Kasich's office, the Congressman met them, and it was the beginning of a remarkable friendship. The courage of these two brothers in battling their disease and, later, facing death, so deeply moved Kasich that he later wrote about it in his book, Courage Is Contagious. "In Washington," wrote Kasich, "I inhabit a world of compromise; back home, Bobby reminded me what real courage is."
How remarkable that two young, ill brothers could make a profound difference in the life of a United States Congressman. How remarkable that some ordinary believers from Rome should cause the great apostle Paul to thank God and take courage.
Whenever we stand up for what's right—at school, work, or in the community, it inspires others to do the same. Whenever we speak a word of Jesus, it encourages someone else to speak for Him, too.
Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.
