In His Strength

Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner."

In her journal in October of 1866, Hannah Whitall Smith jotted down some interesting observations about holiness. "The Lord has been teaching me in many ways lately about my utter weakness in the presence of temptation." Hannah was troubled because she felt she had no more power over sin than when she was first converted. "My own efforts have been worse than useless," she lamented. Then it dawned on her that only Jesus himself perfectly resisted temptation, and He did it through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Likewise when we're fully yielded to God and filled with His Spirit, the indwelling Christ is able to keep us from falling and to give us daily victory over sin.

"I realize that Christ dwells in my heart by faith," Hannah wrote, "and that He is able and willing to subdue all things to himself."

He not only gives us victory—He is the victory.

If I am to be sanctified, if I am to be preserved blameless and harmless, it must be by the power of God for my own efforts have utterly failed.
Hannah Whitall Smith
