Crying Babies in the Theater
It is dangerous to make a rash promise to God before counting the cost.
Proverbs 20:25 (NLT)
Someone once said, "Promises are like crying babies in a theater. They should be carried out at once." When we fail to keep our promises, we diminish our integrity and cheapen our witness. It is important to honor our commitments—the big ones we make at the church altar and the little ones we rattle off every day, like: I'll call you for lunch this week . . . . I'll put the check in the mail . . . . I'll get to it tomorrow . . . . I'll help with your homework tonight . . . . We'll plan a romantic getaway soon . . . . In our desire to be friendly and well-liked, we often promise too much. In our
desire to please God, we make rash promises to Him and only later count the cost. It's endemic in our society, especially during an election year like this one. A popular late- night comedian got a hearty laugh when he quipped that politicians have an uncanny way of breaking even more promises than they've made. Sometimes, he said, they have to borrow promises from other politicians to break.
Well, the Lord always keeps His promises, and He desires that we do the same.
Promise little and do much.
