Loyalty

Let your heart therefore be loyal to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day.

Judges 11:29-36

The account of Jephthah and his daughter in Judges 11 is one of the strangest stories in the Bible. Expositors explain it in various ways. But there's one thing we can safely say about Jephthah's daughter: She was deeply devoted to her earthly father and to her Heavenly Father. She was more concerned about obedience than about her own wants and desires. She had a core of loyalty rarely seen today.

When was the last time you heard the word "loyal" used in conversation? Do you remember the last time you sang that word in a hymn or chorus? It's out of fashion now; but the word "loyal" comes from the old Latin word ligalis, from which we get our English word legal. It means unswerving allegiance to one's lawful sovereign and utter faithfulness to a person to whom fidelity is due.

Frances Havergal summed it up this way in her 1878 hymn: "Truehearted, wholehearted, faithful and loyal, / King of our lives, by Thy grace we will be; / Under the standard exalted and royal, / Strong in Thy strength we will battle for Thee."

To be faithful in every circumstance means that we have only one loyalty and that is to our Lord.
