Living It Out

Daily E-votional from Ed Young Ministries
May 21, 2008 Web Version
In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
James 2:25-26

Rahab was a prostitute. And because of her reputation, it may seem surprising that James speaks of her as being righteous. But that is one of the most powerful things about God's economy.

If you have faith in God, if you trust him, it doesn't matter who you are or what you've done. He will declare you righteous. Another way to say this is that you will be justified by faith.

The term "justified" is a financial term. It simply means that your accounts will be settled, your sins will be wiped clean. Once you put your faith in Jesus Christ, all your sins are forgiven—past, present and future. Justification by faith is not something that you do, it is something you receive.

But true faith, the kind through which you are justified, is always accompanied by true works. Think about Rahab. Though she was a prostitute, she is "considered righteous" because she was willing to put her faith in God into action, even though it could have cost her her life.

As you go through life, don't just say you trust God. Show him that you trust him by your actions. Because as you learn to live out your faith, like Rahab, you will discover that the power and significance he has in store for you.

A Prayer for Today

Dear Lord, It may not be difficult for me to put my trust in you. It may not be hard to say I have faith. But living it out can be another thing altogether. So as I go through life, help me to live out my faith in you so that others can see it and turn to you. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
