...and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.James 1:19-20
So often we equate anger with sin. And so we look at this rhythm for communication—quick, slow, slow—and assume that Paul is telling us to avoid sin. But anger itself is not sin. Righteous anger, in fact, has a place in the Christian life.
What Paul is saying in this text is that anger should not be the first place we jump without first listening to what the other person is saying. Yes, there will be times when you completely disagree with someone. Everything they say may rub you the wrong way.
But when you follow this rhythm for communication—quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger—you will understand what it means to handle situations and relationships the way God wants you to handle them, with grace and mercy.
A Prayer for Today
Dear God, I know that there will be times in life when I am talking with someone I completely disagree with. During those times, help me to listen to their words and to think about mine so that anger is not my first reaction. And as I follow your rhythm for communication, help me to glorify you in every situation. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
